For years and years, I was searching for creative partners. People and institutions that I would work with, who might take what I write and turn it into full productions.

It was only in recent years that I've managed to find a number of creative partners, theatres which I consider my artistic homes. I work with them to workshop my (and other writers') plays, and in return they have given me creative opportunities I could have only dreamed about in previous years.

The Pear Theatre

History with me: I moved to the Bay Area in 2020, and looked for writing groups in my area. A few towns over I found The Pear Playwrights Guild, a writer’s group affiliated with The Pear Theatre, a small professional theatre. I joined the Guild and the rest is history.

Key Collaborations: The Pear has opportunities I had long wished for as it utilized the talented writers of the Guild in various ways. I’ve had short plays done as part of their Pear Slices event, two full-length plays receive readings as part of their Fresh Produce series, I’ve twice been on writing teams composed of Guild Members which mounted full-length mainstage shows, and lastly the play selected and produced my full-length play Chaplin & Keaton on the Set of Limelight in 2024. The bi-weekly meetings of the Pear Playwright's Guild helps me hone my writing.

The landscape for small professional theatres has been challenging of late, and The Pear could use direct help most of all of my creative partners. Asian-American Playwright Collective

History with me: I had been an aspiring playwright living in Boston for well over a decade, and I had never met another Asian-American playwright until I met Christina Chan as a fellow member of the Company One Workshop in 2016. Through her I met others, and we decided to form a collective through which we could develop and promote our work. We’ve found others as we’ve gone along, expanding our offerings and ambitions, and I’ve maintained this relationship even as I’ve moved to the West Coast.

Collaborations: Every year I contribute a short play to the annual AAPC PlayFest, a production of ten minute plays written by AAPC members. These have been collected into a series of anthologies which are edited by Hortense Gerardo.

Community Building: Starting with three playwrights at the beginning, we've added other writers, directors, actors, and built a COMMUNITY out of previously ignored Asian creatives of all generations in the Boston area! The growth has been such that we as a group need to take the step and become a full fledged nonprofit. That takes resources and also time in order to do properly.

The Pulp Stage

History with me: As the pandemic hit, this tiny hybrid of a theatre and a reading group assembled a writing group which would meet over Zoom and write short plays that had to include specific prompts, a series they called “The Writer’s Nightmare”. Consistently workshopping these led to the creation of much of my favorite short plays. A later challenge to think about longer pieces led me to create the series “Treachery Island”, which I’ve later converted to a full-length stage play. The Pulp Stage’s focus on Pulp Genres (sci-fi, horror, suspense, crime, etc.) suits my sensibilities.

My latest project with them is to compile the many plays we’ve written over the years for the Writer’s Nightmare into printed collections assembled by common themes. Buy them! They are so much fun to put together.

TL:DR: The Pulp does fun Sci-Fi and genre play workshopping. This scrappy group can use your eyeballs! (and money. always money)

My inclusion in their PlayLab was an important development in my life, and helped introduce me to the playwrights I would later form Asian-American Playwright Collective with.

Fresh Ink Theatre, Boston, MA
The one theatre in Boston solely focused on new plays. Did a reading of Repossessed. I also participated in their wonderful Mad Dash event twice.

Boston Theatre Marathon, Boston, MA
The signature new play event in Boston. For more than a few years having a short play in this event was the highlight of my year, writingwise.

Playground SF, San Francisco, CA
A member of their writing pool since 2023, provides a monthly writing challenge from which they choose only 6 (out of 30+ entries) to produce. Also chapters in LA, Chicago, and NY doing the same thing.

Portland Stage Co, Portland, ME
Produced Last Ship to Proxima Centauri in 2022 after it won the Calder competition, one of the few regular opportunities for New England playwrights.

Theatre Conspiracy, Fort Myers, FL
My first produced full-length play was done by Theatre Conspiracy in 2016, when they did Repossessed. Please note that Fort Myers has taken a direct hit by recent hurricanes. I'm sure Theatre Conspiracy could use help from that.

Kitchen Dog Theater, Dallas, TX
After the pandemic hit, Kitchen Dog pivoted to do a filmed, streamed production of Last Ship to Proxima Centauri in 2022.

I'm not a Midwest resident, but I've attended the Midwest Dramatist Conference a number of times and consider it my "home" conference.
